How Special Education Helps Children with IDD

Intellectual disability means having below-average capacity for intellectual functioning than the general public. It also manifests in having challenges with adaptive behavior. Developmental disability, on the other hand, means having a developmental delay in terms of physical, cognitive, communication, social or emotional, and/or behavioral development.

Children with IDD have special needs that could not be addressed in the usual school setting. They have challenges in learning and adapting that the teacher should focus on. Developmental disability care is an important component of special education.

Generally-used teaching methods may not be as effective when taught to children with IDD. This is why special education teachers need extra training.

As a trusted provider of care services and support programs in New Jersey, we want to share with you how special education and our academic and tutorial services help children with IDD:

  • Personalized teaching
Children with IDD learn effectively in a one-on-one setting, where their academic and behavioral challenges are focused on and addressed specifically.
  • Social skills training
Aside from academics, developing social skills is important for children to grow up and become independent adults. Part of this is teaching proper communication and encouraging positive adaptive behavior.
  • Self-care skills training
Special education and tutorial services also include teaching the children how to take care of themselves. Self-care usually involves learning about and practicing proper hygiene, dressing, toileting, and feeding.
